In Slovenia, we have public and private universities and many smaller independent higher education institutions that offer numerous study programmes in all areas. All Slovenian higher education institutions are accredited and meet the required national and international standards.

University of Ljubljana
University of Ljubljana is the oldest (est. 1919) and largest higher education institution in Slovenia. With 40.000 enrolled students, studying on 23 faculties and 3 academies, it is one of the larger universities in Europe.
University of Maribor
V Republiki Sloveniji je letno na voljo cca. 10.000 postelj v javnih študentskih domovih. Ti so organizirani po največjih študijskih središčih v Ljubljani, Mariboru ter v Slovenski Istri. Študenti imajo možnost bivanja tudi v dijaških in zasebnih študentskih domovih tudi v drugih, manjših študijskih središčih v Novi Gorici oz. Vipavi, v Kranju, Novem mestu, Celju, Slovenj Gradcu, Postojni, Brežicah… Mesečna subvencija za bivanje v študijskem letu 2025/2026 znaša 38,92 EUR na študenta za bivanje v javnih študentskih domovih. University of Primorska (Universita del Litorale)
University of Primorska is the youngest of Slovenian public universities, located in the Mediterranean southwest of the country. With focus on research of regional (Istrian and Mediterranean) identity and phenomena, it hosts more foreign students than any other university.
University of Nova Gorica
The first of the private universities, founded by the Municipality of Nova Gorica and Jožef Stefan Institute is a research oriented university with strong international cooperation and high ratio of staff per student.
University of Novo mesto
University of Novo mesto is the fourth public university in the making. Already established private university, 4 public faculties and one private faculty will be joined in the new public university, based in the southeast of Slovenia.
New University
Second of the private universities was established in 2016 with units dispersed in Ljubljana, Kranj, Nova Gorica and Maribor. Its focus is on governmental studies, law and international relations.
Alma Mater Europea University – European Center Maribor
AMEU-ECM is Slovenian part of pan european initiative AMEU. It holds accredition of university since 2024 and provides study programmes in variety of fields, from humanities to physiology, dance and social gerontology.
Euro-Mediterranean University (EMUNI)
EMUNI was established as a network of universities in the Euro-Mediterranean region, aimed at strengthening and tightening cooperation between higher education institutions in Southern Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. Its headquarters are located in Piran, a city at the Adriatic Sea.
